Hi Everyone! My name is Sara.

I grew up in Great Falls, MT, and my very first job was at TCBY (The Country’s Best Yogurt.) They carried ice cream cakes, and decorating those, using knowledge I gleaned from my mom’s 80s Wilton Method books about making icing borders and roses, was my first taste of cake decorating.

After moving to Bozeman, MT, in 2003 for college, then deciding maybe that wasn’t the best choice for me at the time, I worked various jobs including Safeway as a cake decorator and eventually I became head decorator at Albertson’s. Production was never my strong suit… I have always preferred small batches and more details. I taught some Wilton classes at the local Michaels store and made some cakes for friends and family.

I married my husband, Nic, in 2008, (yes I made our wedding cake, lol) and when I was pregnant with our son in 2010, I ended up having to stop working when I was about six months along. That ended up being a good thing, because by the end of January 2011 my water broke at 31 weeks and I was life-flighted to my hometown because Bozeman didn’t have a NICU. I ended up having an emergency c-section at 34 weeks, and our little 3.5lb preemie was in the NICU for three weeks until we were finally allowed to come home, still some weeks short of his due date. I include all of that in my story because it was a massive event in my life, which led to us making the choice for me to stay home with him instead of going back to work at the bakery. (PS, our kiddo was fine, he was just tiny and early, and his lungs have struggled over the years with respiratory illnesses because of asthma. Currently (Dec 2025) he is a freshman in high school, is taller than I am, plays soccer for his school team and for a travel team, and is eating everything in sight.)

It was hard decorating anything when he was little, but once we moved to Missoula in 2014 for my husband’s job and I joined a local moms group, I was encouraged by friends to make a facebook page after they found out I could decorate cakes. Thus, Frosting Cakery was born! I chose the name because I wanted it to sound like a “real” business, and in case I ever had a storefront in the future I wanted something that would transfer over! Fast forward eleven years, and my desire for a storefront has waned, but my business has continued to grow and I LOVE making cakes and cookies for locals!

I think my favorite part is getting to make different themes for various kids as they grow… I have some customers who had one of my cakes at their baby shower and I have made treats for every birthday their child has had since. I love being part of your special celebrations, and I’m always up to the challenge of a new design. Needing that variety likely comes from my ADHD, which I was diagnosed with in early 2025. I knew before that, but as I type this I’m actually still struggling to understand what that means for me and how I operate my business going forward. I’m working on trying to organize myself and my calendar, finding systems that work to motivate me, and understanding that I’ve been this way my whole life and I’m not broken, my brain is just a little extra sparkly.

In 2022 I was fortunate enough to be able to do an episode of the Food Network’s Christmas Cookie Challenge (season 6, episode 5) and in 2023 I was on four episodes of Food Network’s Holiday Wars! (season 5, episodes 2,4,5,6) Looking ahead, I would love to do more shows, with “Is It Cake"?” being my currently lofty competition goal! I was called before season 2 filmed, but I was getting a hysterectomy right before filming would have started and I didn’t want to push that surgery, which has hugely improved my quality of life overall.

When I’m not baking, I’m probably at the gym, either taking or teaching SHiNE Dance Fitness or UPLIFT Strength Fitness classes. I’m proud of how far I’ve come with my physical health, and I hope to remain strong and active… decorating doesn’t seem like it would be too hard on your body but it really is!

I also love birds, and spend a good chunk of time watching them, learning about them, and taking photos of them! I love butterflies and unicorns and sparkly things, I enjoy binge watching TV shows (cookie decorating all-nighters sometimes help that along), paranormal and true crime podcasts, and fuzzy blankets.
